At first glance, the Fiat 500 and Abarth 500 look almost identical. In fairness, they are closely related; Abarth is Fiat’s performance division, relaunched in 2007 to turn everyday Fiat models into something much more exciting.  

But while they may share the same iconic shape, these two small cars offer very different driving experiences.

Design: retro charm vs sporty attitude

The Fiat 500 is one of the most recognisable small cars on UK roads. Its retro-inspired styling, rounded headlights, and compact size have made it a go-to choice for city drivers since its modern revival in the late 2000s.

The Abarth 500 starts life as a Fiat 500 but adds a much more aggressive edge. Expect a lower stance, sportier bumpers, larger alloys, and distinctive Abarth detailing. In simple terms, the Fiat 500 is stylish, friendly, and urban-focused, while the Abarth 500 is bolder, louder, and built to stand out.

Performance and driving experience

This is where the biggest differences appear. The Fiat 500 is designed for everyday use. Most used models come with small petrol engines (such as 1.2-litre or 0.9-litre units), prioritising fuel efficiency, low running costs, and ease of driving. It’s light, easy to park, and ideal for town driving or new drivers.

The Abarth 500, on the other hand, transforms that same platform into a proper hot hatch. With a turbocharged engine producing significantly more power (often around 135–165hp depending on model), it delivers much quicker acceleration and a far more engaging drive. You’ll also notice firmer suspension for sharper handling, a louder, sportier exhaust note, and a more “go-kart-like” feel on twisty roads. Put simply, they appeal to completely different types of drivers.

Practicality and everyday use

In terms of size and usability, both cars are very similar. The boot space is around 185 litres in both models, both seat four people, though rear space is limited, and convertible (C) versions are available, but with a slightly less practical boot opening. These cars are best suited to city driving, short commutes, and drivers who prioritise style over space.

Petrol, hybrid, and electric: what’s available?

If you’re buying used, you’ll likely come across traditional petrol versions of both the Fiat 500 and Abarth 500. However, it’s worth noting that the petrol Fiat 500 was discontinued in the UK in 2024. Newer versions are now available as fully electric (500e) or hybrid models returning from 2026.

Older Abarth models are petrol-powered, while newer Abarth versions are moving towards electric-only. This makes the used market a great place to find classic petrol-powered versions of both.
