Autumn day trips from Exeter
As the temperature drops and summer transforms into autumn, Devon becomes a picturesque dream. Infamous for its countryside and coast, the South West’s landscapes become even more scenic as we enter September.
With the autumn sun highlighting the golden browns and burnt oranges of the trees, autumn is the perfect time to embrace nature. We’ve put together a list of the five best autumn day trips from Exeter.
Castle Drogo
Dartmoor becomes even more idyllic in the autumn, with carpets of crunchy leaves lining the trails, skies of different shades, and streams bubbling through the landscapes reflecting the oranges and reds. Just a 30 minute drive from Exeter, the circular walk around Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge is an ideal route for all the family. The walk skirts the River Teign before heading above the trees of Teign Gorge for panoramic views of the moors. Finish at Castle Drogo to warm up with a hot chocolate, where you can explore the National Trust garden. Their autumn highlights are the Shrubbery, Mr Drewe’s Path, and the Orchard.
Exmouth World of Country Life
Whatever the weather, Exmouth World of Country Life provides fun for all the family. Located on the Jurassic Coast on the outskirts of Exmouth, the attraction includes museums, animals, indoor and outdoor play areas, and entertainment, like at the Barnyard Theatre! Little ones can interact with animals, discover the history of farming, and use their energy at the soft play area.
Haldon Forest Park
Boasting over 3,500 acres of forest, Haldon Forest Park has a number of activities and adventures ready and waiting. Whether you’re looking to complete a solitary hike absorbing the views of Dartmoor, take part in an exhilarating bike ride on one of the trails, or following the Gruffalo Trail with the little ones, Haldon offers something for everyone. Don’t forget to bring wellies and raincoat, just in case.
Darts Farm
Located near the beautiful village of Topsham, Darts Farm is a fantastic place to spend the day, with something for everyone guaranteed. From the well-stocked farm shop filled with local artisan items, to the on-site dining options such as The Fish Shed and the Cow & Cacao Café, you won’t be short on options if you’re after a bite to eat. There’s also a spa, a lifestyle section, and gorgeous walks through woodland and fields. For the kids, there’s a play park and animals to see, and events are often on.
Killerton House
If you’re looking for a gorgeous walking location with gardens and an 18th-century house, you can’t go wrong with National Trust’s Killerton House. 6,400 acres of land provide more than enough landscape for exploring. Witness the change of season in the gardens, explore winding paths and farmland, and take in breath-taking views of the countryside. You can even climb an extinct volcano and discover an Iron Age hill fort, before enjoying a cup of tea in the café.
