Hybrid vs petrol: which is right for you?

14 Oct 2026

Choosing your next car comes with plenty of decisions, and one of the biggest is what should be under the bonnet. With more hybrid models appearing on the used-car market alongside familiar petrol favourites, you might be wondering which is the better choice.

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Both petrol and hybrid cars have their advantages, and the right choice will depend on your lifestyle, driving habits and budget. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s the difference between a petrol and hybrid car?

A traditional petrol car is powered entirely by an internal combustion engine using petrol. They’re familiar, straightforward and available in a huge range of makes, models and body styles.

A hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor to help power the vehicle. The electric assistance can improve efficiency, particularly during slower, stop-start driving. However, not every hybrid works in exactly the same way. The three main types are mild hybrid (MHEV), full or self-charging hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Mild and full hybrids recharge using systems within the car, while plug-in hybrids have a larger battery that can also be charged externally.

Why choose a petrol car?

Petrol cars remain an excellent choice for many drivers. One of their biggest advantages is simplicity. You simply fill up and go, with no need to think about charging. They can also cost less to purchase than an equivalent hybrid, although the exact difference will depend on the make, model, age and specification you're comparing.

For drivers who don't cover huge annual mileages or who spend plenty of time on longer, steady journeys, a petrol car can still make a lot of sense. The used-car market also gives petrol buyers plenty of choice, from compact city cars and family hatchbacks to SUVs and performance cars.

Why choose a hybrid?

A hybrid could be particularly appealing if you spend a lot of time driving around town, commuting through traffic or completing shorter everyday journeys. Hybrid systems can use their electric motor during stop-start driving and recover energy during braking. This is where full hybrids can have a noticeable efficiency advantage over an equivalent petrol car. That advantage can become smaller during steady motorway driving.

A full hybrid can also be an easy introduction to electrified driving because you don't need to plug it in. The battery is replenished through systems including regenerative braking and the petrol engine.

What about plug-in hybrids?

Plug-in hybrids are slightly different. They combine a petrol engine with a larger battery and can be plugged in to recharge, allowing journeys to be completed using electric power before the petrol engine is needed.

They can work particularly well for drivers who can charge regularly and whose everyday journeys fit within their car's electric range. However, if a PHEV isn't regularly charged, you may not see the same efficiency benefits. If you're considering a used plug-in hybrid, think realistically about where and how often you'd be able to charge it.

Is a hybrid cheaper to run than petrol?

It can be, but it isn't guaranteed. Fuel economy depends on the individual vehicle and how you drive it. Hybrids tend to show their strengths in urban and mixed driving, where there's more opportunity for the electric motor and regenerative braking system to play a role.

For a PHEV, running costs will also depend on how frequently you charge, how much electricity costs you, and how many journeys you can make using electric power. Rather than choosing based purely on the word "hybrid", compare the official figures and expected running costs of the individual cars you're considering.

Hybrid vs petrol: which should you buy?

A petrol car could suit you if:

  • You want a straightforward and familiar driving experience
  • You don't have access to charging and don't want to think about it
  • You cover relatively few miles
  • You're looking for plenty of choice on the used market

A hybrid could suit you if:

  • You regularly drive through towns or stop-start traffic
  • Fuel efficiency is an important consideration
  • You want to experience some of the benefits of electrified driving
  • You want a stepping stone between petrol and a fully electric car

A plug-in hybrid could suit you if:

  • You have convenient access to charging
  • Many of your everyday journeys are relatively short
  • You still want the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer trips
